Secure Privacy now supports Google’s Consent Mode behavior. Consent Mode is an API developed by Google to integrate Google tag behaviour and the user’s consent tool. The Consent Mode has five consent types for cookies, such as advertisement, analytics, functional, personalization and security, for using the global site tag or Google Tag Manager (GTM).

Google Consent Mode v2 (GCM v2 for short) now has 2 additional two new parameters in addition to ad_storage and analytics_storage - ad_user_data and ad_personalization.

Advanced consent features

You can use them to decide how the tags behave based on user consent. E.g. if a user denies consent to use analytics cookies, the website will not use the cookies and instead send an aggregate level of analytics information. Thus, the Consent Mode bridges the gap between respecting user consent and measuring conversions.

SecurePrivacy Consent Mode integration

If you use Consent Mode with Secure Privacy, every time website visitors give their consent choice, Secure Privacy will signal Google to modify the tag behavior based on this visitor's choice. Therefore, the website will stop collecting or using any personally identifiable information and use aggregated information for its services, if the consent was declined.

Implementation using Google Tag Manager template

First, you need to set up Google Tag Manager for your website.

Prior to implementing Google Consent Mode through our Google Tag Manager template:

  • For existing Secure Privacy users, ensure the removal of the Secure Privacy Script from the head tag of your website.
  • New users need not add the Secure Privacy script to the head tag of your website.

Now, follow these steps:

Step 1.

First, you need to create a new tag. Click Tags in the left sidebar, and then New as shown.

  3. Set the Region by entering the region’s ISO-standardized (ISO 3166-2) codes for the specific regions you intend to Geo-target with your banner. If you prefer not to Geo-target your banner to specific regions around the globe, enter all in the Regions field. Refer to the ISO 3166-2 standard for the appropriate region codes.
  4. Click Add

Step 5.

Select Consent Initialization – All Pages as the trigger for the tag.

Click Save to complete the integration of Secure Privacy with the Google Consent Mode.

If you’re using Google Tag Manager to add third-party scripts to your website, you may want to block cookies set via GTM that have not been consented to use.

For detailed instructions on configuring third-party scripts in GTM with Secure Privacy, refer our documentation on HOW-TO: block cookies with Google Tag Manager

Conclusion

By integrating Secure Privacy with GCM, you gain a powerful tool for respecting user privacy and ensuring that your website's data collection practices align with visitor preferences. This integration empowers you to build trust with your users and safeguard their privacy while effectively measuring website performance and engaging with your audience.
