How to Comply With CCPA/CPRA “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” Using Secure Privacy

CCPA/CPRA may require a clear, easy-to-find “Do Not Sell” (or “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information”) option for California users—especially if your business “sells” or “shares” personal information (commonly triggered by targeted advertising and certain third-party tracking). This guide shows how to update your Secure Privacy CCPA template widget text to “Do Not Sell” and verify the opt-out experience on your site.

Who is this for?

This is for teams responsible for implementing and maintaining a CCPA/CPRA opt-out entry point, including:

  • Businesses subject to CCPA/CPRA that may “sell” or “share” personal information (e.g., using cross-context behavioral advertising).
  • Privacy & compliance owners who need a visible opt-out link/label on the website.
  • Web teams implementing the opt-out UX (site administrators, growth/marketing ops, or developers) who manage Secure Privacy Templates and site caching/CDN.

CCPA/CPRA “Do Not Sell or Share” Requirement (What You’re Solving)

If your organization is subject to CCPA/CPRA and your data practices qualify as a “sale” or “share” of personal information, you generally need to provide a clear, accessible opt-out for California consumers. Many sites present this as a visible website entry point labeled “Do Not Sell” or “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information.”

Updating your widget text helps:

  • Make the opt-out entry point more obvious to users
  • Align your site UI with common CCPA/CPRA expectations
  • Improve trust and reduce friction for privacy requests

3) Change the widget label to “Do Not Sell”

  1. Find the text field labeled Widget Display Text.
  2. Clear the existing text.
  3. Enter: Do Not Sell
  4. Click Save.

Optional: If you prefer the CPRA wording, you can use “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” instead, as long as it fits your site design.

Verify Your “Do Not Sell” Opt-Out Experience

  1. Open your website (preferably in an incognito/private window).
  2. Confirm the widget now displays “Do Not Sell”.
  3. Click the widget and ensure the opt-out flow loads and works correctly.
  4. If your site uses caching/CDN, clear cache and retest.

Recommended Best Practices (SEO + UX + Compliance Alignment)

  • Use wording users recognize: “Do Not Sell” or “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” tends to match what consumers search for and expect to see.
  • Make it easy to find: Keep the opt-out entry point accessible (commonly in the footer and/or via a persistent widget).
  • Ensure the opt-out actually works: The label is only helpful if the configuration behind it properly limits selling/sharing-related processing as intended.

Common Issues & Fixes (FAQ)

Why is my widget text not updating?

Confirm you clicked Save in the CCPA template. Then clear any site/CDN cache and your browser cache, and retest in an incognito window. If you manage multiple templates/environments, confirm you edited the correct one.

Can I customize widget text for other templates?

Yes. Open the relevant template (for example, GDPR or another regional template) and look for the equivalent Widget settings section to update the display text.

Does changing the widget text alone make me CCPA/CPRA compliant?

Not by itself. The label helps users find the opt-out, but you also need the underlying opt-out functionality to work, and your disclosures and implementation should align with CCPA/CPRA requirements.
